Miniature monk figurines sold at Warorot Market, Chiangmai, Thailand. Warorot Market or Kad Luang is a must-visit for food lovers as it offers a wide range of ready-to-eat meals, local snacks and all kinds of fresh produce. Targeting mostly Thais, Warorot Market is a great place to get a feel for the local way of life. The miniature monk figurines sold here symbolized monks in the north of Thailand. These monks collect alms in the early morning between 5:30am-6am. They may be two or three monks together or a larger group. They share and eat what is donated. Anything surplus is given to the temple helpers and anyone in need. The monks take the food they have collected in their almsbowls back to their Wat and share it with the Buddhist community. When the monk returns to their temple they will choose some of the goods collected in the almsbowls for their morning meals and leave the rest for the nuns and staff and for other monks that could not go out for alms.
